What is your background?
Why did you choose your profession?
I knew as a child that when I grew up I wanted to feed babies. When I was just 10 years old I wrote a "manual" for caring for babies. In high school I looked into being a neonatal nurse, but I didn't want to give babies shots or draw blood. I was on a competitive speech team my senior year and my coach was a Speech Therapist. She opened my eyes to a whole new profession that I knew nothing about. The field of speech pathology was very attractive to me as it allowed me to specialize in dysphagia (swallowing disorders) and work just with feeding babies without needing to do the hard job of needles, shots, and medications. After getting my feet wet in outpatient pediatrics, I worked my way into the NICU. From there lactation chose me. I fell in love with working alongside mommies breastfeeding their teeny tiny preemies. This has been my passion since childhood and I'm thrilled to be doing what I love.
What do you do in your down time?
I'm a Jill of all trades. I love all things art and you can frequently find me painting or drawing at my dining room table. I'm also a musician. I've played piano since I was five and on Sundays you can find me playing keys in my church's worship band. My husband has a passion for my baking skills and is always begging me to whip up some chocolate chip cookies, chocolate pie, or brownies.
What is your favorite baked good?
My mother was a home ec teacher for twenty years and she taught me everything I know about baking. I'm an equal opportunity baked good eater and I've yet to meet a dessert I don't like. My absolute favorite, though, is my grandma's secret recipe raspberry cake. My mom actually got the recipe before grandma died. I always have my mom make it for my birthday. Hopefully some day she'll let me in on the secret of how to make it!!
What is your favorite quote?
I'm a quote junky. One of my favorite quotes, though, is "One handful of rest is better than two fist fulls of labor and striving after wind." Ecclesiastes 4:6
